Job Description

Your responsibilities

As a motivated junior mechanical design engineer, with a specific interest in seeking practical solutions around mechanical systems, CERN's graduate program may very well give you that challenging opportunity. The mandate of the MME group is to provide to the CERN community specific engineering solutions combining mechanical design, fabrication and material sciences. Historically the group maintains and develops the know-how on the mechanical construction of beam accelerator components and physics detectors.

MME involves a large spectrum of highly specialized activities, including on-site facilities and sub-contracting: CAD design, advanced calculations, high precision CNC machining, sheet metal forming, welding and vacuum brazing, dynamic and static measurements, micrometric 3D metrology, metallurgical analysis, destructive and non-destructive material testing.

The Design Office is in charge of mechanical design of components required for CERN's accelerator and detectors, comprising many high tech. equipment such as superconducting magnets and cavities, vacuum systems and instrumentation. This involves studies and developments of new products from conceptual ideas to fully detailed engineered solutions using parametric 3D modelling and 2D drafting, structural, thermal, fluid-dynamic, shock and vibration analyses.

Key responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of a senior design engineer you will design and develop mechanical components and systems from concept to production.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CATIA V5, adhering to ISO GPS norms.
  • Carry out simple structural analytical and numerical calculations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within the group, material science, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
  • Continuously improve designs based on feedback and testing results.
  • Participate in problem-solving and troubleshooting activities related to design and production issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of designs, modifications, and project progress.

What we offer:

  • A collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Access to the latest tools and technologies.
  • Supportive team culture focused on achieving excellence.

Your profile

Are you eager to learn and develop new skills? Do you have excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, and are able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines? Are you known for strong communication and teamwork skills? Are you able to work in a multicultural and language environment? If you answered yes to all these questions, and you have the skills listed below, then you could be our new mechanical design engineer!

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA V5 for creating 3D & 2D drawings.
  • Strong understanding of ISO GPS norms and their application in mechanical design.
  • Practical knowledge of mechanics and mechanical systems.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
    • Ability in learning new languages (French / English) would be a plus.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

    What we offer

    • A monthly stipend ranging between 5134 and 5647 Swiss Francs (net of tax).
    • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
    • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
    • 30 days of paid leave per year.
    • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

    About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
