Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. The university is organized into twenty schools in which approximately 29,300 bachelor's and master's students are enrolled. In 2014 Columbia was ranked the fourth best university in the U.S. by the /U.S. News & World Report. / Columbia University
