The Earth Institute (EI) at the Columbia University in New York was
established as a nonprofit institution in 1995. The EI focuses mainly on
issues concerning sustainable development and poverty alleviation. EI is home
to internationally renowned Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory where top
scientists from around the globe research disciplines such as oceans,
climate, atmosphere and geology, to further the understanding and development
of pressing global issues. EI also advises international governments and
agencies, the United Nations, and academic institutions.Â
