Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which provides specific engineering solutions for CERN, combining mechanical design, fabrication facilities, and material science support.

In particular, you will work in the MME Main Workshop, which masters a wide range of machining technologies and performs critical production for the CERN Accelerator Complex and Experiments, through dedicated in-house fabrication facilities and subcontracting. You will join a team of highly qualified technicians and engineers, and you will participate in the follow-up of fabrication projects for particle accelerator applications.

As a Mechanical Engineer in CERN's Engineering Department, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in the whole lifecycle of mechanical fabrication of components for CERN's particle accelerators. Come test yourself against a diverse range of technologies, serving as the link between physics and mechanical fabrication.

Functions

As a Fabrication Mechanical Engineer, you will provide engineering support for:

Design and construction of machines, production of 2D drawings and 3D models

  • Review drawing files and adapt them for fabrication.
  • Provide technical advice to stakeholders on fabrication methods and design (design for manufacturing).

Manufacturing of mechanical parts

  • Conceive special tooling for machining and fabrication in general. Follow up on production and procurement thereof.
  • Assume direct responsibility for technical coordination of CERN internal fabrication projects.
  • Identify and justify investments in new tooling, fixtures, or equipment and implement into the fabrication process.
  • Manage tendering process for industrial productions including drafting of technical specifications and manage related supply contracts.
  • Provide reporting on corresponding projects and activities

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Industrial Manufacturing or a related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in mechanical design and fabrication projects in a professional context, including design for fabrication, cost estimates, fabrication project management and scheduling (from design to prototyping, manufacturing and commissioning phases).
  • Extensive experience in fabrication processes in a professional context including: machining, metal sheet working and welding.
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical components assembly, good understanding of precision assembly techniques and their application to the design process.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting technical drawings.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and fabricating parts in the cryogenics, radiofrequency or magnets domain or similar equipment would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: in particular ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO dimensioning and tolerancing; knowledge of CAD tools, preferably CATIATM;
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts: design and construction of tools and fabrications strategies for components, involving high precision tolerances;
  • Knowledge and application of non-metallic composites: and metallic materials, such as titanium, aluminium, copper alloys, niobium and stainless steels;
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation: , in particular assembly of mechanical structures and equipment as well as their manufacturing;
  • Quality management: knowledge of quality control procedures and standards applicable to mechanical production including metrology and mechanical measurements.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Solving Problems:
    • Addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components;
    • Finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available;
  • Working in Teams:
    • Cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals;
    • Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
  • Demonstrating Accountability:
    • Taking responsibility for own actions and decisions;
  • Achieving Results:
    • Having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind;
    • Taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary.
