The study programme Master of Science in Civil Engineering is designed for a period of two years (four semesters) and qualifies you for employment in engineering on an interdisciplinary basis.

Target Group and Objectives

If you are already a graduate in Civil Engineering (bachelor or Diplom) or of a comparable study programme (e.g. of a foreign university) in civil engineering or a related area and you would like to enhance and deepen your knowledge, then our study programme Master of Science in Civil Engineering might interest you.

In the study programme Master of Science in Civil Engineering you deepen your previously acquired knowledge and qualifications. The regular period of studies amounts to two years or four semesters. Your studies are determined by the ability to recognize professional problems and assignments in their complexity and to deal with them as well as to find new solutions. A special focus lies on the interdisciplinary and international cooperation beyond one’s own area of expertise.

A degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering fulfils the academic requirements and is equivalent to the former university diploma (Universitätsdiplom). It opens up numerous possibilities in the professional world as well as in related areas requiring highly qualified employees. Alternatively you can work in research or aim for a doctoral degree.

Organisation of the Study Programme

The Master’s Programme Civil Engineering is designed for two years or four semesters. Altogether the accumulation of 120 credit points (ECTS) is required for graduation. The calculation is as follows: 1 CP (credit point) amounts to 30 hours of estimated workload. Most courses are designed for 6 credit points. The average amount of credit points to be obtained per semester is 30.

Overview

As a Master of Science in Civil Engineering graduate your degree satisfies academic requirements and you are able to do practical and academic work as a civil engineer.

In the study programme you will deepen your previously acquired skills in the area of civil engineering from the point of view of the natural sciences. The ability to recognize professional problems and assignments in their complexity determines your studies, as does the development of novel solutions to various problems.

The willingness to cooperate internationally beyond professional, administrative and political boundaries on an interdisciplinary basis is just as necessary as the ability to weigh different solutions, to describe them in a factual and understandable fashion and reach and well-founded decisions.

Individual Examination Schedule

You have numerous choices in arranging your individual examination schedule (Studienplan). You can choose three or four basic research subjects, out of which a specialised subject is chosen. The master thesis must be written in the specialty subject.

Offered research subjects:

  • Construction Management
  • Building Construction and Building Physics
  • Structural Mechanics
  • Facility Management
  • Geotechnics
  • Concrete and Masonry Construction
  • Material Technology and Construction Maintenance
  • Numerical Methods and Informatics in Civil Engineering
  • Steel Construction
  • Structural Analysis
  • Environmental, Spatial and Infrastructure Planning
  • Environmental Technology
  • Traffic and Transport
  • Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management

The studies can also be organised the in form of an academic specialisation profile. The following academic specialisation profiles are offered:

  • Construction Management
  • Structural Mechanics
  • Construction and Maintenance of Traffic Systems
  • Civil Safety Engineer
  • Facility Management
  • Sustainable Design
  • Constructional Engineering
  • Planning, Design and Operation of Traffic Systems
  • Water and Environment

Master Thesis

With the master thesis you show your ability to use independently the knowledge acquired during your studies. During your studies you are supervised by a mentor who assists you in professional questions.

The master study programme imparts the same qualifications as the former diploma study programme (Diplomingenieur) Civil Engineering.
