Overview

The Master of Engineering Science (Civil) provides a broad range of skills to investigate, plan, design and maintain complex civil engineering solutions. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on practical skills and teamwork.

Civil engineers develop and maintain a wide variety of physical infrastructure such as bridges, buildings, airports, roads, railways, ports, mine sites, water and wastewater supply, treatment and reuse systems. They also help to maintain sustainable natural environments.

They are highly creative and innovative problem solvers who design, construct, manage, maintain, or rehabilitate all aspects of this infrastructure. The technical solutions developed by civil engineers must take into consideration social, environmental and financial constraints.

Civil engineers work closely with architects, planners and the community to ensure that what is constructed is what is needed. And unlike many disciplines, the fruits of civil engineering often last a very long time.

Your career

Civil engineering graduates are in great demand with career destinations including building and construction, transport and the mining industries.

What you will study

You will be provided with study in both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, and the course builds on your previous experience and knowledge.

Topics cover areas such as physics, materials, mechanics, mathematics, project management and innovation, and a masters research project.

In addition, the Master of Engineering Science (Civil) may include topics in:

  • infrastructure systems engineering
  • advanced infrastructure engineering design
  • civil engineering design
  • engineering geology and geomechanics
  • geotechnical engineering
  • structural engineering
  • hydraulics and water engineering
  • transport systems engineering.

Practical experience

The excellent links that Flinders engineering staff have with industry partners on research and development projects mean that there are many work placement opportunities available.
