You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The position is opened in the Sources Targets Interactions (STI) Group, which is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all intercepting devices across the CERN complex, including studies related to crystal-based beam manipulations. In particular, the Targets Dumps and Collimators (TCD) Section is responsible for the mechanical and operational aspects of CERN’s beam intercepting devices, including the spallation neutron target of the n_TOF facility, the antiproton production target, the primary targets for the North and East Halls, all beam collimators, dumps and absorbers of the injector complex and the LHC.

These are key components in CERN’s accelerator complex, used to absorb particles from the high energy particle beams needed for CERN’s experimental research programme.

The increasingly high particle beam energies and intensities needed to ensure CERN’s position as the world leading particle physics research laboratory lead to unprecedented challenges in the design of new or upgraded beam intercepting devices.

Functions

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning and in-service support of new beam intercepting devices along with upgrades of existing equipment.

This will involve:

  • Mechanical design of devices including finite element method (FEM) and theoretical calculations, selection of materials and lubricants along with integration of precision sensors and actuators;
  • Assembly and validation tests of structures and mechanisms – many with specific precision or UHV requirements;
  • Organization of industrial and in-kind procurement including writing of technical specifications, market surveys, price enquiries, managing supply contracts for the industrial production of small series or in-kind partners;
  • Execution of R&D activities including one-of-a-kind design works and material testing with beam;
  • Supervision of technical personnel in the field for design, prototyping, production, commissioning and maintenance interventions;
  • Operation of accelerator components such as beam intercepting devices and support of experimental facilities, including full life-cycle documentation by means of asset management tools;
  • In-depth investigations and tests to determine root causes of operational failures, radiation damage, development of repair plans and carrying out repair interventions. 

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical, nuclear, aerospace engineering or applied physics or a related field.

Experience:

Extensive experience in the following:

  • Mechanical equipment design and construction projects in a professional context including design calculation, integration of control system elements (mechatronics), cost estimation, project management and scheduling;
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of finite element methods (FEM) for nonlinear, static and dynamic, thermal and mechanical analyses, along with hand calculations and use of computer aided design (CAD) in a professional context;
  • Mechanical components assembly, good understanding of machining techniques and their application to the design process;
  • Carrying out risk and failure mode analyses, analysis of equipment breakdowns and feeding the results into the design process.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation,in particular assembly of mechanical structures and equipment as well as their manufacturing;
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures,in particular numerical modelling in solid mechanics (finite-elements), integration of mechanical systems and production of 2D drawings and 3D models;
  • Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract;
  • Project management, including operational and maintenance management considerations.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
