Project Overview 

This position is for an aviation prospect in Ireland. The project has not been awarded yet and offers will be extended post project award. Bechtel will be working in an integrated team with our client to support the delivery of a Capital Investment Plan of circa €2bn within an operating airport environment. 


The ideal candidate would be a team player capable of adaptation to an integrated team environment. A driven self-starter, confident, agile, articulate and capable of leading change by example. Collaborative and flexible to meet all the demands of the client. 


Role Overview 

The Civil Design Engineer will have responsibility for the assurance and, where required, the design of civil engineering elements. The role will involve the assurance of designs carried out by design consultants and contractor design teams and will require the review of designs and design assumptions, drawings, schedules of quantities, calculations, compliance documentation, Nav Aids assessments and contract documentation.  The Civil Design Engineer will ensure design compliance with applicable standards and Client requirements. 


Main Responsibilities 

  • Ensure designs are completed in accordance with timelines, quality, and cost objectives as set out by the Client. 

  • Assure the design of civil elements are in accordance with codes of practise, statutory requirements and ICAO/EASA standards. 

  • Assess project requirements relating to civil engineering elements and ensure they are both feasible and in line with the Clients objectives.  

  • Review and approve civil design calculations and drawings as specified within the quality management system. 

  • Attend and contribute to risk assessments for construction works. 

  • Engage with and bench-mark against UK and European Airports to apply best practice standards and procedures. 

  • Ensure works are designed and phased in a manner which minimises operational disruption and that are constructible and cost efficient. 

  • Review external design packages for appropriateness and completeness. Review all consultants’ work and contractor submissions. 

  • Assist in the preparation of tender requests for the procurement of external consultants and support the procurement of civil design services and contractor(s). 

  • Assist with the writing of specifications and technical reports, conduct site visits and site surveys. 

  • Manage and oversee all issues, root causes, and corrective actions, ensuring closure in a timely manner. 

  • Manage and oversee the technical performance of the external and third-party consultants. 

  • Make a timely response to technical queries and requests for information from stakeholders. 

  • Ensure clear coordination with other disciplins (e.g. electrical, mechanical, architectural, structural design). 


  • Minimum 10 years relevant experience in aviation and other large, complex projects. 

  • Experience acting as a Design Lead on large projects including acting in an assurance role reviewing designs and drawings. 

  • Have an understanding of the safety processes and requirements of designing and constructing at operational airports. 


  • Ability to prioritise effectively, meet deadlines and deliver consistently. 

  • Ability to work in a challenging environment both on their own initiative and as part of a team.  

  • Excellent report writing and ability. 

  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and people management skills. 

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement under tight deadlines. 

  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and MS office suite 

  • Proficiency in the use of Avi-PLAN software is desirable 


  • Masters in relevant field would be advantageous 

  • Chartered member of a relevant professional body e.g. Chartered Engineer (MICE, IEI or Equivalent)
